About Sea Wall / A Life

The Broadway transfer of Sea Wall / A Life, directed by Carrie Cracknell, played the Hudson Theatre for a limited 9-week engagement in summer 2019. The production, which previously played a sold-out limited engagement Off-Broadway at the Public Theater from February 1 to March 31, 2019, is comprised of two compelling monologues performed by two talented actors of both stage and screen. Tony Award nominee Tom Sturridge stars in Olivier and Tony Award-winning playwright Simon Stephens' Sea Wall, whilst Academy Award nominee Jake Gyllenhaal returns to the New York stage in Olivier Award-nominee Nick Payne's A Life.

Jake Gyllenhaal previously collaborated with Nick Payne for his Off-Broadway debut with Roundabout Theatre Company back in August 2012, starring as Terry in Payne's If There Is I Haven't Found It Yet at the Laura Pels Theatre and earning Drama League and Lucille Lortel Award nominations. He would once again work with the playwright, this time for his Broadway debut in December 2014, starring alongside Ruth Wilson, in the Manhattan Theatre Club production of Payne's two-hander Constellations at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre. He has since wowed audiences and critics alike with his musical performances in the New York City Center productions of Little Shop of Horrors in the summer of 2015 and Sunday in the Park with George in the fall of 2016. The latter would be granted a Broadway transfer and played a sold-out limited run from February to April 2017, which re-opened the Hudson Theatre. However, Gyllenhaal is, of course, best known for his career in film, immortalised by his 2006 Oscar-nominated performance in "Brokeback Mountain." Movie fans will also know him from his Golden Globe-nominated turns in "Nightcrawler" and "Love & Other Drugs," and high-profile appearances in the likes of "Spider-Man: Far From Home," "Nocturnal Animals," "Everest," "Southpaw," "Prisoners," "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time," "The Day After Tomorrow," and "Donnie Darko."

British actor Tom Sturridge once again collaborates with playwright Simon Stephens, having made his stage debut in Stephens' Punk Rock in London back in 2009, which led to him starring in Wastwater for Stephens at the Royal Court Theatre in 2011. Broadway fans may remember Sturridge for his performance in Orphans - his Broadway debut in the spring of 2013, which earned him his first Tony Award nomination (alongside a Theatre World Award). He would return to the Great White Way in the summer of 2017 to star as Winston in the Broadway premiere of the stage adaptation of George Orwell's thriller 1984. Sturridge's other London stage credits include No Quarter at the Royal Court, The Trial at the Young Vic, and American Buffalo (starring opposite John Goodman and Damian Lewis) at the Wyndham's Theatre, and film fans may recognise him from notable roles in the likes of "Being Julia," "Like Minds," "The Boat That Rocked," "On the Road," "Far from the Madding Crowd," and "Mary Shelley."

Following the Off-Broadway debut of Sea Wall / A Life, Tom Sturridge was celebrated with his first Lucille Lortel Award nomination, whilst Jake Gyllenhaal received a Drama League nomination for "Distinguished Performance" for his efforts, and then fans had the opportunity to witness this unique storytelling experience on the Great White Way.

Sea Wall / A Life is a heart-filled exploration of the beauty of life and meaning of love. Tom Sturridge, in his third collaboration with Tony and Olivier Award winner Simon Stephens, performs Sea Wall, an astonishing monologue about love and the human need to know the unknowable. Jake Gyllenhaal continues his artistic collaboration with Olivier Award-nominated playwright Nick Payne in A Life, an emotional examination of how sons become fathers and the transformative power of love.
