About Hillary and Clinton

In October 2018 producer Scott Rudin announced that Broadway favorites Laurie Metcalf and John Lithgow would be returning to the Great White Way to star in a brand new play by Tony Award nominee Lucas Hnath. The casting of either of these accomplished actors of the stage and screen is always warmly received, but this time around, the anticipation was perhaps even greater than usual because of the fact that they would be portraying perhaps one of if not the most famous real-life married couple in America today! Of course, we're referring to Hillary and Bill Clinton.

The 42nd President of the United States of America and the former First Lady and 2016 presidential candidate have experienced no shortage of high drama in their lives, which have frequently been splashed across tabloid newspapers and featured in news headlines not just in the States, but around the entire globe. From infamous adultery scandals to personal email controversies, there has always been plenty of meat available for a story or two to be told on Broadway... Enter gifted playwright Lucas Hnath.

Mr. Hnath first made waves off-Broadway with his critically acclaimed 2015 hit The Christians at Playwrights Horizons, before firmly establishing himself as an intellectual force to be reckoned with on the Broadway scene with his Tony-nominated, audacious sequel of sorts, A Doll's House, Part 2. In the latter play, Laurie Metcalf took on the iconic Ibsen role of Nora Helmer and delivered a knockout performance, as theatre enthusiasts eagerly discovered what exactly happened to Nora years after her exit and that famous slamming of the door at the conclusion of A Doll's House. Her performance also earned Metcalf her first Tony Award, following three previous nominations.

Now, Metcalf returns to collaborate once again with Hnath to star as Hillary Clinton, who we meet in 2008 during her first bid for the presidency. What could possibly go wrong?...

Metcalf and Lithgow are supported by Zak Orth as Hillary's campaign manager, Mark Penn, and by Peter Francis James as Barack Obama himself, but seeing this pairing of two-time Tony Award winners on stage is nothing short of theatrical gold.

More information about Hillary and Clinton

Behind closed doors in the state of New Hampshire during the early days of 2008, a former First Lady named Hillary is in a desperate bid to save her troubled campaign for President of the United States. Her husband, Bill, sees things one way; her campaign manager, Mark, sees things another. If any of this sounds familiar, don’t be fooled; in a universe of infinite possibilities, anything that can happen, will. In Hillary and Clinton, Lucas Hnath examines the politics of marriage, gender roles, and the limitations of experience and inevitability in this profoundly timely look at an American dynasty in crisis.
