About Tartuffe

Get Tartuffe tickets when they go on sale on New York Theatre Guide to see Tony Award winner and screen icon Matthew Broderick star as Tartuffe in this update on the classic by award-winning playwright Lucas Hnath. Coming to New York Theatre Workshop, Tartuffe plays this fall for a limited run only.

Tartuffe's in our house, and he's gotta get out. Experience Tartuffe off Broadway and see the French masterpiece as you've never seen it before: full of delectable wit, an over-the-top design, and plenty of gags for some downright buffoonery.

Broderick takes on the iconic role of Tartuffe, a womanizer who needs every craving met, and he is joined by a sterling cast of stage and screen stars to take on other famous roles.

Emmy Award winner David Cross (“Arrested Development”) is Orgon, Obie Award winner Emily Davis (Is This A Room) is Mariane, “RuPaul’s Drag Race” winner Bianca del Rio is Madame Pernelle, Tony Award nominee Amber Gray (Hadestown) is Elmire, Obie Award winner Ryan Haddad (Dark Disabled Stories) is Damis, Tony Award winner Francis Jue (Yellow Face) is Cleante, Tony Award winner Lisa Kron (Fun Home) is Dorine, and Emmy Award nominee Ike Ufomadu (“Ziwe”) is Valére.

“This season we are thrilled to give audacious artists the boldest possible canvas to debut world premiere productions,” said New York Theatre Workshop Artistic Director Patricia McGregor in a statement. She called this adaptation of Tartuffe "a raucous reinvention of a classic comedy."

Obie Award winner Sarah Benson (Teeth) directs this updated comedy, written by Hnath, one of the United States' most-produced playwrights. Known for his intellectual but charged pieces like The Christians, Red Speedo, and Dana H., Hnath tries out a new form with the bombastic Tartuffe.
