The nonprofit company Second Stage Theater was founded in 1979 to produce “second stagings” of contemporary American plays by living playwrights. Second Stage Theater now also presents world premieres, musicals, and solo performances.

The 296-seat Tony Kiser Theater is Second Stage’s main Off-Broadway venue. The company also presents Off-Broadway shows in the McGinn/Cazale Theater during the summer, and it owns and operates the Hayes Theater on Broadway.
