The Portuguese Kid Tickets

Manhattan Theatre Club kicks off its 2017-2018 Off-Broadway season at New York City Center with the world premiere of The Portuguese Kid, written and directed by Tony, Pulitzer Prize, and Academy Award winner John Patrick Shanley.

Tony Award winner and "Seinfeld" star Jason Alexander takes the lead role of Barry Dragonetti, alongside 3-time Tony Award nominee Sherie Rene Scott as Atalanta.

Jason Alexander won a Tony Award in 1989 for Jerome Robbins' Broadway. He was last seen on the Great White Way in Larry David's Fish in the Dark in 2015. His other Broadway credits include "Accomplice" (1990), "Broadway Bound" (1986), "The Rink" (1984) and his Broadway debut in "Merrily We Roll Along" (1981). He is perhaps best known for his TV role as George Costanza on "Seinfeld", which earned him a total of 7 Emmy Award nominations and 4 Golden Globe nominations.

About The Portuguese Kid:

In Providence, Rhode Island, habitually widowed Atalanta pays a visit to her second-rate lawyer Barry Dragonetti. Intending to settle her latest husband's affairs, this larger-than-life Greek tightwad quickly becomes a nightmare for her cheesy, self-aggrandizing attorney. Add Barry's impossible Croatian mother, a dash of current politics and a couple of opportunistic young lovers, and you have in hand a recipe for comic combustion.

The Portuguese Kid has it all: idiosyncratic characters you cannot help but champion, rambunctious dialogue that leaves you occasionally breathless, and a director’s deft massage of the actors’ already polished gifts for comic timing. The plot’s not much — Attorney Barry Dragonetti (Jason Alexander) and recent widow Atalanta Lagana (Sherry Rene Scott) set up the story in the... Read more
