Titled Shout Sister Shout after one of Tharpe’s songs, the bio-musical will open on Broadway at a date to be confirmed.
Shout Sister Shout!
After a 2017 world premiere at the Pasadena Playhouse in California and a 2019 run in Seattle, Shout Sister Shout! will now open on Broadway. The musical will feature some of Tharpe's greatest hits, including “Strange Things Happening Every Day,” “Didn’t It Rain," and “Up Above My Head."
Inspired by Gayle F. Wald’s 2007 biography Shout, Sister, Shout!: The Untold Story of Rock-and Roll-Trailblazer Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the jukebox musical tells the story of gospel music’s first star, who sold out arenas in the 1950s redefining music forevermore. During her career, she influenced the likes of Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry, even finding Little Richard.
Further details on casting, a venue and performance dates for Shout Sister Shout! are to be announced.
Hailed as the godmother of rock and roll, Sister Rosetta Tharpe’s unique gospel voice and virtuoso guitar influenced some of the greatest musicians of all time, from Elvis Presley and Aretha Franklin to Little Richard, Bob Dylan, Tina Turner, and Johnny Cash. Shout Sister Shout! is a soulful and joyous noise that will inspire, entertain, and leave you wanting more.
