Prayer for the French Republic

Manhattan Theatre Club presents the world premiere of Prayer for the French Republic, the newest play by Drama Desk Award and Outer Critics Circle Award winner Joshua Harmon, at New York City Center. Prayer for the French Republic tickets are available on New York Theatre Guide now.

Prayer for the French Republic is a play that spans five generations of a French Jewish family in Paris. The show begins at the height of World War II in 1944, when a couple worries for their missing family, desperate for information on their whereabouts. The uncertainty of their family’s safety makes the couple wonder whether they themselves are safe, and decades later, their great-grandchildren — and all the generations in between — find themselves asking the same question. The family has lived on the same land for generations, but as outside hatred gets passed down through the years, the family is never quite secure.

Joshua Harmon first experienced Off-Broadway success with his 2012 play Bad Jews at Roundabout Theatre Company, which earned Lucille Lortel and Outer Critics Circle Award nominations. His next Off-Broadway show at Roundabout, Significant Other, transferred to Broadway in 2015, and he premiered one more show with the company in 2018: Skintight, starring Idina Menzel. In between, Lincoln Center Theater produced his play Admissions in 2018, which won Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Outstanding New Off-Broadway play and Best Play, respectively.

Now, he teams up with David Cromer — who won a Tony Award for directing The Band’s Visit on Broadway — for Prayer for the French Republic Off-Broadway, which marks Harmon’s debut with Manhattan Theatre Club.
