After an acclaimed run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the new musical Islander is making its New York debut. Get Islander tickets now.
In Islander, a girl named Eilidh spends her days on a hardship-wracked Scottish island. The last child left there, she feels lonely as many of the island's other residents have fled for the mainland. She dreams of a new life somewhere out beyond her island and the vast sea that surrounds it. Everything changes when a mysterious stranger washes ashore with the tide, and the line between reality and myth blurs. The Islander musical is inspired by Scottish legends about "fin-folk" who live in the sea.
Olivier Award nominee Kirsty Findlay and The Stage Award nominee Bethany Tennick perform the entire Scottish folk-inspired score a cappella. They blend their voices to create a dreamlike soundscape. Looping technology is used to mix and layer their voices live while they move the storytelling forward, playing every character.
Before the debut of Islander in New York, Stewart Melton and Finn Anderson's musical premiered at the 2019 Edinburgh Fringe Festival to rave reviews, winning Musical Theatre Review’s Best New Musical at the festival. The show moved on to an equally successful run at England's Southwark Playhouse. Now, it's the first show to open the new Playhouse 46 @ St. Luke's, the performance venue that replaced the shuttered St. Luke's Theatre when it closed in 2020.
