Rashaad Newsome presents a history of Black creative expression in Assembly, a multidisciplinary performance event at Park Avenue Armory. Get Assembly tickets on New York Theatre Guide.
The immersive world of multidisciplinary artist Rashaad Newsome's Assembly comes alive each evening with a series of electrifying performances featuring an international collective of singers, MCs, musicians, and multi-faceted dancers from the worlds of ballroom, ballet, and everything in between.
Presented in the Wade Thompson Drill Hall, this high-energy choreographed celebration spotlights the many facets of vogue and ballroom culture in our world through live music, dance, spoken word, musical theater, hip hop, and opera. The cast of acclaimed dancers—including Puma Camillê, Koppi Mizrahi, Danil Vitkovski, Stanley Glover, Ruddy Frias, José Lapaz-Rodriguez, Robert Mason, Nicholas “Primo” Segar, Hisyam Qumhiyeh, FemQueen Troop, and others—chronicles the history of vogue performance from its origins in the 1970s to its present-day diasporic permutations to a speculative future all with stunning choreography by Kameron N. Saunders, Ousmane Omari Wiles, and Maleek Washington. Live MCs including Ms.Boogie, TRANNILISH, and Bella Bags hold court over the festivities, with performances by singer Kyron El, opera singer Brittany Logan, a gospel choir, and live musicians.
Newsome's artificial intelligence (AI) progeny, Being, appears throughout each performance, acting as a storyteller who weaves together these various creative expressions born out of Black culture.
