Approval Junkie is a play adapted from Faith Salie's 2016 memoir Approval Junkie: Adventures in Caring Too Much. She first hit the stage with Approval Junkie in its 2019 world premiere at Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia. In the show, Salie details various anecdotes from her life in which she sought validation, often in the wrong places, from winning her high school beauty pageant to choosing the perfect divorce outfit. Ultimately, her show examines how she came to seek approval within herself — and receive it.
The comedian and journalist has appeared on NPR’s Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me! and CBS News Sunday Morning, for which she has won three Emmy Awards, alongside many other journalistic credits. She is also an actress, having appeared in four films between 1998 and 2004, and on TV shows including Married... with Children, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and Sex and the City.
As with previous Audible Theater productions at Minetta Lane Theatre, Approval Junkie will be recorded and released as an audio play. Audiences around the world will be able to listen to Salie's story if they cannot get to the in-person run before it ends.
