‘Hamilton,’ ‘Wicked,’ and ‘The Lion King’ to return to Broadway in September

Following Governor Cuomo's announcement, the three blockbuster musicals will be some of the first to be back on stage.

Hamilton, Wicked, and The Lion King announced this morning on Good Morning America that the shows will be back from September 14, the first day that Broadway performances will resume. Performers Alexandra Billings (Madame Morrible in Wicked), Krystal Joy Brown (Eliza in Hamilton), and Steven Taylor (Mufasa in The Lion King) made the announcement on the morning news program.

The news follows Governor Andrew Cuomo's announcement last week that Broadway will be back. However, this news from three of the industry's biggest shows was supposed to be the first announcement that Broadway would return, according to multiple sources. Since the announcement came earlier than expected, many shows have already announced their returning dates, including SIX, Chicago, Come From Away, Mrs. Doubtfire, and Ain't Too Proud.

The rare joint announcement from blockbuster shows is intended to communicate a spirit of unity among the community and send the message that Broadway is coming back better than it was before the pandemic. Since the news of Broadway's reopening has spread across social media, many leading performers, including Tony winner Laura Benanti, Telly Leung, Julia Murney, and many more, have asked for the industry, the unions, and the Broadway League to deliver concrete steps of how they'll be protecting underrepresented communities and keeping all employees safe and protected.

Hamilton will restart performances at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Sept. 14. The Lion King will begin performances at the Minskoff Theatre on Sept. 14. Wicked will resume performances at the Gershwin Theatre on Sept. 14.
