Magic Mike The Musical announces its pre-Broadway engagement
Magic Mike The Musical will stage a world premiere engagement in Boston in fall 2019, ahead of a Broadway premiere.
Ready for the bump and grind, Broadway? Channing Tatum presents Magic Mike The Musical in a world premiere pre-Broadway engagement at the Emerson Colonial Theatre in Boston, beginning previews on November 30, 2019, officially opening on December 15 and running through to January 5, 2020. The Broadway premiere is expected to follow.
The tuner is an official prequel to the hit movies "Magic Mike" and "Magic Mike XXL," featuring an original story written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and music and lyrics by Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winners Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey - the songwriting team that brought you the hugely celebrated Next to Normal.
Channing Tatum released the following statement: “When we were shooting Magic Mike, I looked at myself in a thong and thought: ‘well Chan, say goodbye to your career!’ So the idea that seven years later a Pulitzer Prize-winning creative team would be making a full-fledged musical prequel is definitive proof that God loves strippers. I couldn’t be more excited about the next chapter in the Magic Mike story. So get ready, Boston. The road to Broadway begins on November 30!”
Synopsis: "Set before the hit movies Magic Mike and Magic Mike XXL, this original stage production tells the story of college-student-turned-male-entertainer Mike Lane. Struggling to make ends meet, Mike takes a job dancing at an exclusive night club… and winds up loving every minute of it. But as he scrambles to hide his alter ego from his dad and girlfriend, he finds himself needing to make some difficult choices. Can Mike follow his dreams without losing more than his clothes?"
The production is directed by Trip Cullman, currently represented on the Great White Way by Choir Boy, who commented: “Magic Mike was made for the Broadway stage. I can’t imagine a more creative and fun team of artists to collaborate with to make this show soar.”
The creative team also includes choreographer Camille A. Brown, who also collaborated with Cullman on Choir Boy and earned great acclaim (as well as Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, & Chita Rivera Award nominations) for her work on the recent Tony Award-winning revival of Once on This Island.
The phenomenal Magic Mike franchize was born in 2012 with the release of the box office smash "Magic Mike," directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring Channing Tatum as Michael "Magic Mike" Lane, alongside fellow cast members Matt Bomer, Alex Pettyfer, Joe Manganiello, and Matthew McConaughey. A sequel helmed by Gregory Jacobs, "Magic Mike XXL," was released in 2015, with the two films grossing almost $300 million combined. The franchize would branch out into live entertainment in 2017 with the launch of Magic Mike Live in Las Vegas, which became an instant hit and added its first international production with a London incarnation in 2018.
Exact dates, a venue and casting for the Broadway premiere will be announced in the coming months.
