Did you go to training school, if so which one?
Yale University and American Conservatory Theatre.

Your first stage performance was?
Performing James Weldon Johnson's The Creation for my 2nd Grade School Assembly.

Career highlight to date?
Emergence-SEE at the Public and THROUGH THE NIGHT at the Union Square Theater.

What roles would you most like to play?
I would love to play Dr. King.

What is the best advice you have ever received?
If you have fun, the audience will have fun.

What is the most annoying part about your job?
Working during the times when most everybody else is out having fun - the weekends!

Briefly tell us how you came to write Through the Night?
In this time when people are losing their jobs, losing their homes, sometimes losing their minds, I wanted to tell an uplifting story to encourage people to keep going - to make it Through the Night.

Briefly tell us about the character(s) you portray in Through the Night?
My core characters are a group of men ranging ages 10 to 60. They include a brilliant child scientist, a young man on his way to college, and ex-con reintegrating back into society, a corporate music executive, a father who runs a health food store in the hood, and a Bishop of a mega church.

If you had not become a performer, what might you have done instead?
I would probably be some type of social activist.

Who are your favorite actors/actresses?
I love Sean Penn, Denzel Washington and Judi Dench.

If you could meet anyone in the world dead or alive who would it be and what would you say to them?
Oprah and I would say "Put me on your show!"

Favorite after-show haunts?
My bed!

Favorite TV programs?
I love “Private Practice.”

Favorite holiday destinations?
Cancun.

Do you have any hobbies?
I love to exercise and to explore great restaurants.

What are your future plans?
To keep writing and performing. I have a laptop full of stories I am eager to share.

Daniel Beaty Credits
Daniel Beaty is an award winning actor, singer, writer, and composer.

His critically acclaimed solo play Emergency (formerly Emergence-SEE!), directed by Kenny Leon, ran off-Broadway to a sold-out, extended run at The Public Theater in the fall of 2006. For this production, he received the 2007 Obie Award for Excellence in Off-Broadway Theater for Writing & Performing and the 2007 AUDELCO Award for Solo Performance. New York Magazine awarded him a 2007 Culture Award for Best in Theater.

Beaty has toured Emergency nationally and internationally. He is the recipient of the 2007 Scotsman Fringe First Award for the best new writer at the Edinburgh Festival and was presented with a Lamplighter Award from the Black Leadership Forum in Washington D.C. In February 2008, he received two Helen Hayes Award nominations for the best in theater in Washington D.C. and in June 2008, he was the winner of the Unique Theatrical Experience Award from the New Jersey Star Ledger for his production at the Crossroads Theater Company in New Brunswick, New Jersey. In the spring of 2008, Emergency had a sold-out seven-week engagement at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles. This production was directed by Charles Randolph-Wright and was awarded two 2009 NAACP Theater Awards including Best Actor.
