Behind the Candelabra: A Liberace musical?

Behind the Candelabra

Michael Riedel of the New York Post reports that Jerry Weintraub, producer of the th 2013 HBO film Behind the Candelabra, a biography movie about the entertainer Liberace, wants to adapt it into a Broadway musical. There has been no official confirmation.

According to the report Weintraub, who has yet to hire a director or writer for the musical, is making a list of actors who he would like to play Liberace on Broadway. At the top of the list are Hugh Jackman and Nathan Lane.

The movie Behind the Candelabra is a 2013 American drama, directed by Steven Soderbergh, about the last ten years in the life of pianist Liberace and the secret affair he had with young Scott Thorson, based on Thorson’s memoir, 'Behind the Candelabra: My Life With Liberace.'

The film looks at the amusing extremes of Liberace's lifestyle – the over-the-top clothes and the palatial home – as well as the sadder realities of a life lived in the closet. It stars Michael Douglas as 'Liberace' and Matt Damon as 'Scott Thorson.'
