During an interview on CBS's The Early Show, Nicolas Sparks, author of the 1996 novel The Notebook, which was made into a movie in 2004, said the novel was to be adapted into a Broadway musical.

Sparks was asked during the interview if a stage adaptation of the New York Times bestselling novel was in the works, to which the author replied, “We’re still in development of this process. Obviously The Notebook is going to be some sort of musical and a lot of fun to be getting involved in that process, too.”

Sparks made no mention of cast, crreative team or producers for the project.

A reading of a musical adaptation written by composing team Bethany Joy Galeotti and Ron Aniello, was presented as a reading in Wilmington, North Carolina in October 2009.

The Notebook is a love story told by an elderly man reading from his faded notebook to an elderly woman in a nursing home.

The story follows the lives of two North Carolina teens from very different worlds. Though her upbringing takes place in an antebellum mansion, and he grew up in the kind of house where musicians strum on the porch, that doesn't stop Noah and Allie from spending one incredible summer together, before they are separated, first by her parents and then by WWII. When the war ends, Alli, who is now engagaged to a business man, reads a newspaper article about Noah, and decides she must meet him and finally decide the path her life should take.

The 2004 film adaptation, written by Nicholas Sparks, Jeremy Leven and Jan Sardi, was directed by Nick Cassavetes, and starred Ryan Gosling as 'Noah' and Rachel McAdams as 'Allie.'
